2011 WAS A GREAT YEAR FOR NOVAK

2011 was a fantastic year for tennis fans, and especially for Novak Djokovic. He won a total of 10 tournaments, which included Grand Slam victories at the Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon. He was named the Player of the Year by ITF and was hailed by tennis greats such as Boris Becker and Pete Sampras.

He climbed to the world no. 1 ranking as a result of his multiple victories and set the record for the highest amount of prize money ever won, a staggering 12 million USD.

He finished the year on a high, by claiming the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, held in Abu Dhabi. He defeated the Spaniard, David Ferrer, in the finals. But the road to the finals wasn’t a cakewalk. His semi-final opponent was ex world no. 1, Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic saw off that threat with a straight set victory, winning 6-2, 6-1.

This just goes to show the level of tennis that Djokovic is playing nowadays. Djokovic continued his stellar performance by crushing the world no. 5, Ferrer, by the same score. Defeating two world class players in consecutive matches in straight sets is no mean feat.

Novak Djokovic looking to Improve

The top ranked tennis player in the world, Serbian ace Novak Djokovic is happy with the results he managed in 2011 but he is not ready to rest on his laurels and is looking to improve his game further in order to consolidate his position at the top of the ATP Tour world rankings. The ‘Djoker’ is particularly looking to improve his game at the net, which has been identified as a weakness for the big hitting Serbian by his coach Marian Vajda. According to the world number one, it was Vajda who had recommended that he improve his forehand shots as well as his services and the results were there for everyone to see.

Now that he wants him to improve his net play, Djokovic believes that there must be something wrong with it and has been working day in and day out on his game at the net. Novak Djokovic, who won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments last year has been in scintillating form for the last couple of seasons and is looking to start the season off on a high when he competes in the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Djokovic surged past the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to become the number one player in the world and he is looking to continue his rich vein of form and Vajda, who has been his coach since he was nowhere near the top in 2006 is the man who he trusts the most to keep him there.

Novak Djokovic believes that the tournament in Abu Dhabi, where he will be competing for the first time, is a great tournament to prepare for the Australian Open and a win at Abu Dhabi will give him added confidence ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam.
